I learned English, what’s next?

The first thing we ask all new students is – why do you want to learn English? 50% people give one of the following 3 answers:

  1. I want to get a promotion at my job back home
  2. I want to study at an English language college/university
  3. I want to feel more comfortable when I travel

The other 50% say: I will be living in Boston for the foreseeable future or permanently and need to establish a life here. They often do not know what opportunities are available to them but they understand that without a good command of the English language they will not be able to succeed in the United States.

We tell students that there is a variety of jobs that do not required a college degree but rather a certificate. Many certificate programs are are designed to be completed in a short time frame (under 6 months) and prepare students to pass a certification exam (for example medical/dental assistant). Once the student has passed the certification exam, they can apply for jobs.

So when a student comes to us and says, “I learned English, what’s next?,” we are happy to point them to a variety of paths, which all end in potential employment. Learning English is simply the first step in that direction!
