If you are preparing for the TOEFL iBT listening section, this is the part of the exam that follows Reading, and it tests a different skill entirely: understanding spoken English in real time, without the ability to reread anything. As of January 2026, ETS also changed how TOEFL listening is scored, moving to a new adaptive format. If you are new to the exam overall, our guide on what the TOEFL test is and how it works covers the basics before you focus on this section specifically.
Below is a clear explanation of the current Listening format, how it is scored, and how to prepare.
The Listening section uses four task types:
Listen and Choose a Response plays a short spoken prompt and asks you to choose the most natural reply. This task tests your understanding of meaning and common spoken English patterns, not just individual words.
Listen to a Conversation uses short, everyday conversations, often set on a university campus. Questions ask about the main idea, key details, and what the speaker really means.
Listen to an Announcement uses short academic or campus announcements. Questions test your understanding of the speaker’s purpose, key information, and what is likely to happen next.
Listen to an Academic Talk uses short lectures similar to a real TOEFL listening sample you might hear in an introductory university course. Questions test your understanding of the main idea, supporting details, structure, and inference.
Across all four task types, the Listening section includes 47 items in total, with a base time of about 29 minutes. You are allowed to take notes while listening, and audio is played only once. The section includes native English accents from North America, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, so you will hear more than one accent during the test.
Like Reading, the Listening section moved from the old 0–120 total score, with each section scored 0–30, to a new 1–6 band scale, given in half-point steps. If you want to know what score you should be aiming for based on your school or program, our guide to what counts as a good TOEFL score breaks this down by target school and program type.
Listening also follows the same adaptive structure as Reading. All test-takers complete the same first section, sometimes called a routing module. Your performance here decides whether you move on to a harder or easier second module. Scoring well, generally around 60 percent correct, leads to the harder path, which allows the full 1–6 score range. Scoring below that threshold leads to the easier path, where the highest possible score is capped at 4.0. This means your accuracy in the first part of the Listening section limits how high your final score can go, so it is worth full focus from the very first question.
If you’re comparing Listening to the rest of the TOEFL test or thinking about the TOEFL exam as a whole, here is how the four sections currently compare. If you are still deciding between English proficiency tests, our comparison of TOEFL vs. IELTS vs. Duolingo can help you choose the right one for your goals.
| Section | What It Tests | Format | Approx. Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | Vocabulary, comprehension, inference | 3 task types, up to 50 questions, 2 adaptive modules | ~30 min |
| Listening | Comprehension of conversations, announcements, and lectures | 4 task types, 47 items, 2 adaptive modules | ~29 min |
| Speaking | Spoken accuracy, fluency, and natural conversation | 2 task types, 11 items | ~8 min |
| Writing | Sentence structure, email writing, and academic opinion writing | 3 task types, 12 items | ~23 min |
Strong listening skills for the TOEFL come from focused, current practice, not general exposure to English media. If you want guided support to build the strategies above into consistent habits before test day, ISAL’s TOEFL Test Prep program is built to help you do exactly that.
