What Counts as a Good IELTS Score? IELTS Band Score Range Explained

Scored a 6.5 on the IELTS and not sure if that’s enough? Or maybe you haven’t taken the IELTS test (International English Language Testing System) yet and want to know what to aim for. Either way, the answer depends on where you are applying, though most competitive U.S. schools want to see at least a band score of 6.5 to 7.

Here’s what the score actually measures, what’s considered competitive, and how long it stays valid after you earn it.

Understanding the IELTS Band Score Range

IELTS band score scale (0–9) by CEFR level
C2 · 8.5–9.0
C1 · 7.0–8.0
B2 · 5.5–6.5
B1 · 4.0–5.0
A2 · 3.0–3.5
A1 · 2.0–3.0

The IELTS score range is 0 to 9, in half-point steps. Four separate scores make up that number: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, each scored on its own 0-to-9 scale. To get your overall score, these four scores are averaged and rounded to the nearest half band.

A 9 is the highest possible score, the IELTS max score and IELTS highest score, described as an “expert” user: someone whose English is very close to that of a highly educated native speaker. Very few test-takers achieve a 9 in every section. In practice, this means a strong IELTS listening score or IELTS reading score can raise your average even if your IELTS writing score or IELTS speaking score is lower, since the final number is simply the average of all four.

IELTS Score Ranges

There’s no single exact number that works for everyone, but here’s a general guide by goal, using the range of TOEFL scores you’ll see across most admissions pages:

5.0–6.0
Typically accepted by community colleges and some state schools. These programs often provide additional English language support, so admissions tend to be more flexible on this score than at four-year institutions.
6.0–7.0
The range most four-year universities require, and a good target if you are applying to several schools. Landing here gives you a score that clears the requirement at most competitive four-year programs.
7.0+
Required by highly selective universities and many graduate programs. Harvard's Griffin GSAS, for example, requires a minimum overall score of 7, with a minimum IELTS speaking score of 6.5.

The number on a school’s admissions page is usually a minimum, not a target. Programs with a strong writing component often expect a score higher than that minimum. You may also see these referred to as TOEFL grades or TOEFL test grades, just different wording for the same scoring system.

How Long Do IELTS Scores Last?

An IELTS score is valid for two years from your test date. After two years, it is no longer accepted for new applications, so if you do not plan to apply right away, keep this timeline in mind before you schedule your test.

Comparing IELTS, TOEFL, and Duolingo scores

Here is how IELTS compares to TOEFL and Duolingo:
